Board of Education

The Board of Education will take part in a pair of community meetings at 6 p.m. Monday, April 15 and 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20 in the Alameda High School cafeteria; the entrance is on Central Avenue near Walnut Street.

On the agenda: A pair of facilitators will invite the public to say what they’d like to see become of the Historic Alameda High School campus, much of which has been vacated due to seismic safety concerns.

More information: Agendas are posted here; the meetings won’t be televised, though The Alamedan will stream Monday’s meeting live and both meetings will be recorded and posted to the school district website.

Public Utilities Board

The Public Utilities Board will hold a pair of meetings on Monday, April 15, with the first taking place at 4 p.m. at the Main Library, 1550 Oak Street, and the second beginning at 7 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

On the agenda: The board will hold a budget and planning workshop at 4 p.m. Monday, where they will discuss the 2014 budget and strategic initiatives for the next year and beyond. Alameda Municipal Power is facing a $4.9 million deficit due to rising costs, which it plans to cover using reserves. At the 7 p.m. meeting, the board will discuss a planned rate hike, the fourth in a series of five planned rate hikes, which will cost Alameda Municipal Power’s residential customers an average of $1 to $2.65 a month and raise $1.7 million for the utility next year. The board is also being asked to approve changes to the utility’s program for selling green power to other utilities and to follow up on a planning workshop held in January.

More information: Agendas and materials are here; the 4 p.m. meeting will be recorded and available on the utility’s website, while the 7 p.m. meeting will be televised on Comcast cable channel 15.
