Welcome to this week’s edition of The Broad Brush, your weekly, two-sentence news review. Here are your Alameda headlines for the week.

For more than 14 years, Alameda Family Services has been providing shelter to homeless, runaway and “thrown away” teens in an eight-bed Victorian in Oakland. But the teens may soon find themselves with nowhere to go.

The board that oversees Alameda’s power supply took in a presentation Monday on potential cyber threats to that supply and to financial information of Alameda Municipal Power’s customers.

Alameda charter school staffers’ decision to unionize is receiving national attention. The incoming president of the National Education Association – a national teachers union – is coming to Alameda to shine light on the organizing efforts of staffers at Alameda Community Learning Center and Nea Community Learning Center.

Development Alert: Balaji Alameda LLC wants to build a four-story, 72-room extended stay-style hotel on a 0.93-acre parcel at 1700 Harbor Bay Parkway. If approved, the new hotel would accompany a three-story, 105 room Hampton Inn that was approved for an adjacent property in 2006.

Alameda Business Buzz: Sunday Crafternoons have returned to Alameda South Shore Center’s Modern Mouse. The events, which launched in February 2013, remind customers to shop local and support local artisans.

News in brief(er): A local institute that seeks to advance women in technology and science has received a $900,000 grant … Alameda Assemblyman Rob Bonta is one of several East Bay legislators supporting a bill to take guns from people who may commit violent acts … and Alameda Point-based Artemis Racing is competing in the next America’s Cup.
