The Update: Zoning measure qualifies for ballot

THE STORY: The federal government made a deal to sell homebuilder Tim Lewis Communities a 3.89-acre property on McKay Avenue. But the East Bay Regional Park District – which has sought the property in order to expand Crab Cove, which is across the street – objected, suing the city to try to undo zoning that would permit housing there and rallying parks lovers and the state to its cause. The federal government has also jumped in, suing to take a street from the state that’s needed to move Tim Lewis’s development plans forward. A citizens’ group called Friends of Crown Beach gathered and turned in signatures for a ballot measure that would rezone the property for park use only.

THE LATEST: The Alameda County Registrar of Voters certified that the group collected enough signatures to qualify the measure for the November 4 ballot. The City Council now has three options: Adopt the ordinance called for by the petitioners, place the measure on the ballot or order a report on the possible impact of the proposed ballot measure.

WHAT’S NEXT: The council will decide which to choose at its June 3 meeting. Meanwhile, Friends of Crown Beach is celebrating its successful signature drive with a party from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday, June 1 at the Aeolian Yacht Club, 980 Fernside Boulevard. The party is open to the public.
